Region: Ribbon Ridge AVA, Willamette Valley, Oregon
The Wine: Brick House is Doug Tunnell's Demeter-certified biodynamic estate on a 440-foot rise of marine sedimentary soils in Ribbon Ridge. A former CBS News correspondent who fell for wine in the Rhône Valley, Tunnell pioneered biodynamic farming in the Willamette Valley.
Les Dijonnais is a barrel selection from 30-year-old Dijon clone vines on a full south-facing slope, hand-harvested, fermented with 32% whole clusters on native yeast, and aged 18 months in French oak with 30% new.
The 2023 Les Dijonnais is darkly floral and precise, trading the brooding quality of the Pommard clone for brightness and lift. It opens with aromas of Earl Grey, dried black cherry, and stone dust, lifted by violet and rose petal. On the palate, it is juicy and medium-bodied with lively acidity, lightly grippy tannins, and a long mineral finish.
Pairing: Duck breast with cherry and shallot pan sauce, salmon roasted with fennel and herbs, a mushroom and fontina flatbread.
