The Wine: Calvez Bobinet is the collaboration of Sébastien Bobinet — a seventh-generation vigneron from Dampierre-sur-Loire — and his partner Émeline Calvez, a trained sommelier, who together run a biodynamically farmed estate outside Saumur rooted in organic agriculture, indigenous yeasts, and zero-additive winemaking. Les Îles is made from 100% Grolleau Noir grown on tuffeau limestone soils, harvested by hand, and vinified in two passes: part carbonic maceration, part short skin contact, then aged briefly in tank to preserve freshness. The wine is bottled unfiltered without added sulfites.
Les Îles 2023 is a loose-limbed, gulpable expression of the Loire — less a serious red than a vivid argument for drinking well on a Tuesday. It opens with aromas of fresh cherry, crushed raspberry, and a faint peppery spice, lifted by a floral, slightly wild herbal note. On the palate, it is light-footed and crunchy, with snappy acidity, low tannin, and a juicy, fruit-forward finish that stays clean and dry.
Pairing: Rillettes de Tours on a thick slice of sourdough, a cold roast pork sandwich with cornichons and mustard, lentil salad with shallots and red wine vinegar, or a late afternoon table of Loire Valley chèvre and walnuts with the bottle sitting in a bucket of ice.
