The Wine: La Vedetta is the project of Marco Viglino and his wife Swantje, who returned to Marco's family vineyards in Barbaresco in 2016 with the intention of making wines that are accessible and immediate without sacrificing the depth and identity the appellation demands. Their Cà Grossa is a single-MGA Barbaresco from 0.6 hectares of 30-year-old Nebbiolo planted at 250 meters elevation on the Tre Stelle hillside — a distinctive parcel of marly, clayey-calcareous soil with 15–20% fine sand, which gives the wine a lighter-footed, more perfumed character than the heavier clay sites nearby.
Grapes are fermented with spontaneous yeasts, macerated around 10 days in stainless steel, then aged 20 months in large oak casks and held a minimum of eight months in bottle before release.
The 2022 Cà Grossa is a fine-boned, aromatic Barbaresco that leads with elegance over structure. It opens with aromas of dried violet, ripe red cherry, and warm spice, lifted by a note of iron and rose petal. On the palate, it is refined and balanced, with already well-integrated tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral finish — approachable earlier than most Barbaresco while still having the bones to develop.
Pairing: Braised rabbit with rosemary and white wine, tajarin with a simple butter and sage sauce, aged Toma Piemontese with honey, or a quiet dinner at a kitchen table in the Langhe with whatever is already in the pan.
