Country: Spain

Region: Baix Penedès, Catalonia

The Wine: Partida Creus is the project of Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerona, an Italian couple from Piedmont who trained as architects, moved to Barcelona, and eventually settled in the Massís de Bonastre in the Baix Penedès around 2000, drawn to a slower life and clay-limestone soils. Finding no wines made the way they wanted to eat and drink, they started making their own — recovering old vines of local varieties, farming organically, and working without any added sulfur at any stage. VN, their white field blend, is a kind of anti-Cava: seven indigenous varieties — the same grapes used to make the region's sparkling wine. This was vinified as a still wine with 1–3 days of skin maceration (think orange wine), spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, two months on lees, then bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without SO₂.

The 2023 VN Vinel·lo Blanco is a hazy, lively, low-intervention white that reads more like a seaside picnic than a serious wine — and is better for it. It opens with aromas of yellow apple, white peach, and a faint floral lift from the Moscatell, grounded by a yeasty, slightly cloudy depth. On the palate it is crisp and light-bodied, with briny acidity, a gentle waxy texture from the skin contact, and a clean, saline finish that practically asks for something salty alongside it.

Pairing: Grilled razor clams with lemon and olive oil, a plate of jamón with pan con tomate, fresh goat cheese with herbs on flatbread, or a long afternoon on a Catalan beach with anchovies, cold olives, and this pulled straight from the cooler.
