The Wine: Colombera & Garella is the collaboration between Cristiano Garella — a driving force of the Alto Piemonte renaissance — and the Colombera family in Bramaterra, where they farm organically on porphyritic volcanic soils at 350 meters in the cool Alpine foothills. Melascone was the old Biella dialect word for both Nebbiolo and everyday vino rosso — a name that signals exactly what this wine is. Spontaneously fermented, maceration monitored to keep tannins approachable, aged in used oak and concrete, unfined and unfiltered.
The 2022 Melascone opens with aromas of powdered cherry, dried rose, tobacco, and forest floor, lifted by a saline mineral thread. On the palate it is medium-bodied and precise, with supple tannins, vivid acidity, and a long, earthy finish — Nebbiolo's essence made immediately inviting.
Pairing: Risotto with bone marrow and Parmigiano, braised rabbit with rosemary, a platter of local salumi with giardiniera, or a quiet dinner of tajarin al ragù in a room where the Alpine air still has a chill to it.
